My absolute must read recommendations:
Books:
Reality Based Self Defense
-Reality Based Personal Protection by Jim Wagner (yes, he is a fake, but he has a lot of good stuff he cribbed and stole from his instructors- it is a good comprehensive guide to practical combatives and also dealing with the police and the law). Available from Black Belt Books
-The Little Black Book of Violence by Lawrence Kane – I read it at Borders one day, excellent thought provoking book that really teaches you the psychosocial aspects of violence and violence prevention, along with martial arts techniques. Available from YMAA
-On Combat by Lt. Col. David Grossman and Loren Christensen
-The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker
-Street Survival by Ronald Adams and Charles Remsberg, Calibre Press
- The Krav Maga books by Darren Levine, David Kahn and Eyal Yanilov.
-Books by Marc “The Animal” MacYoung
-The Citizen’s Guide to Stopping Suicide attackers by Itay Gil
-Books by Stanton Samenow
-Deadly Force Encounters,What Cops Need To Know To Mentally And Physically Prepare For And Survive A Gunfight by Dr. Alexis Artwohl and Loren W Christensen
Japanese Martial Arts
-Meik and Diane Skoss’s books (they also have a good list here :http://www.koryu.com/library/mskoss5.html)
-Dave Lowry’s books
-Ellis Amdur’s books
-Harry Cook ‘s Shotokan Karate: A Precise History
Military Science and Philosophy
-Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War by Robert Coram (the OODA loop comes from Boyd!)
-About Face and other books by David Hackworth
- H. John Poole’s books (One More Bridge to Cross is not that good)
I’ll make a suggestion to one of my favorite books…
http://www.amazon.com/Solo-Training-Martial-Artists-Guide/dp/1880336596/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1327521352&sr=1-1
I am a big fan of this man’s books. My only beef with it is that the pictures are often a little small, and there are too few of them for some of the more complicated drills. Still, every martial arts bookshelf should have this.
